About Cape Coast Castle
A UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a powerful reminder of the transatlantic slave trade.
Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty "slave castles" or large commercial forts built on the Gold Coast of West Africa by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese "feitoria" or trading post, established in 1555.
Today, the castle is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a museum with exhibits about the transatlantic slave trade. Guided tours take visitors through the castle's dark history, including the dungeons where enslaved Africans were held before being transported to the Americas.
